Why I’m Running for Re-Election

In 2016, I ran for the City Council because I was sick of sitting on the sidelines. I had a lot of ideas as to how we could improve our city – from making City Hall more transparent, to engaging with more residents and including them in the decision-making process. I also had a lot of ideas as to how we could weatherproof our city budget to withstand any financial storms that may lie ahead.  

I have worked on these issues every day since I was elected, and I am proud of the results thus far.

Increase government transparency: I authored the city policy requiring that any materials provided to the council also be provided to the public and posted online AT LEAST 24 hours before a city council meeting. Not only should this information be available to any resident that wants it, we need to make it as convenient as possible for them to find it.

Engaging with residents: Yeah, I’m THAT guy on Facebook. From the get-go, my motto was “my phone never turns off.” If a resident need to get ahold of me, I want to be accessible. Facebook. Email. Text message. All of it. Whether it was my “100 Cups of Coffee with Kevin” meetings or sending handwritten notes to new residents when they close on their new home, I have always found tremendous value in putting in that little bit of extra time to connect with residents and just “be available” if they ever need anything.

In addition to engaging with me, I want residents to engage with city hall. Our city commissions play an important role in reviewing important information and providing recommendations to the city council. When there are vacancies on these commissions, we are missing an opportunity to hear from more community voices. I have worked hard to recruit community members to fill these positions and add their voice to city government.

Tighten up the city’s budget: 2020 has shown us how our financial future can change in the blink of an eye. I have my copy of the annual budget with me at every meeting to serve as a reminder that the decisions we make are funded with somebody else’s tax dollars.

I would be lying if I said this job was easy, but it has been my honor to work for this community. I hope I can count on your support on November 3rd, and together, we can get the work done!
